Generative Engine Optimization: How to Get Cited by AI

Buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini instead of scrolling Google. GEO is the practice of becoming the source those engines name. Here is how it works — and how to start.

In short

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) makes your brand quotable and trustworthy to AI answer engines, so they cite and recommend you by name. It builds on strong SEO, adds structured data and answer-ready content, and measures your share of voice across each engine.

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of earning citations and recommendations inside AI-generated answers — across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic's Claude — the same way traditional SEO earns rankings in a list of blue links.

When someone asks an assistant “what's the best AI marketing agency in San Francisco?” the model composes an answer from a handful of sources it trusts. GEO is the work of becoming one of those sources: making your content easy for a model to find, parse, quote accurately, and attribute to your brand.

Why does GEO matter now?

Search behaviour is shifting quickly. Gartner has projected that traditional search-engine volume will fall meaningfully as buyers move to AI assistants, and a large share of product research already begins inside a chat interface rather than a search box.

The catch: an AI answer usually names only a few sources, not ten. If your competitors are cited and you are not, you are invisible at the exact moment a buyer is forming an opinion. GEO is how you get into that short list.

How is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily — strong SEO signals feed the citation decisions models make — but the target is different:

  • SEO optimizes for ranked lists of links. Success looks like position one for a keyword.
  • GEO optimizes for being quoted inside a synthesized answer. Success looks like your brand named and linked in the response itself.

GEO adds three things on top of good SEO: engine-specific visibility measurement, deeper structured data, and content deliberately engineered to be quotable. You cannot have great GEO on a technically broken site — the foundation still matters.

How do AI engines decide what to cite?

Clear, extractable answers

Models favour content that answers a question directly and early. A page that states the answer in the first two sentences — then supports it — is far easier to quote than one that buries the point under marketing copy.

Structured data and entity clarity

Schema.org markup (Organization, FAQPage, Article, LocalBusiness), a clean entity graph, and a consistent brand name across the web help a model understand who you are and trust the attribution.

Corroboration and authority

Engines cross-check. If several independent, reputable sources describe your brand the same way, a model is more confident naming you. This is where digital PR, reviews and citations earn their keep.

Freshness and crawlability

AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended must be allowed in robots.txt, and your sitemap should be current. If a crawler can't reach the page, it can't cite it.

How do you optimize for GEO? A practical checklist

  • Publish answer-ready content. Lead with the answer, use question-style headings, and keep paragraphs quotable.
  • Add structured data. Mark up your organization, FAQs and articles so machines can parse them.
  • Fix the fundamentals. Fast pages, valid HTML, a complete sitemap and an llms.txt file that points crawlers to your best material.
  • Build corroboration. Earn mentions and links from sources the models already trust.
  • Cover the whole question. Depth-first content that answers follow-ups on the same page is more citable than thin pages.

How do you measure GEO success?

The core GEO metric is share of voice: across a set of buyer questions, how often does each engine mention, cite or recommend your brand versus competitors? You track it the way you track keyword rankings — as a trend you can move. Pair it with referral traffic from AI engines and, ultimately, leads and revenue.

That closed loop — baseline, build, measure — is exactly how we run GEO at GThree.

What does GEO look like in practice?

Imagine a buyer opens ChatGPT and types, “who's a good AI marketing agency in San Francisco?” Behind the scenes the model gathers candidate sources, weighs how clearly each describes itself, checks whether other sites corroborate the claim, and then names two or three. GEO is the work that puts you in that set: a crisp, factual description of what you do; structured data that spells out your name, location and services; pages that answer the follow-up questions (“how much does it cost?”, “what makes them different?”) so the model never has to leave your domain to complete its answer.

The compounding effect matters. Each answer-ready page you publish becomes another surface a model can quote, and each corroborating mention makes the attribution more confident. Over time that turns into durable share of voice rather than a one-off spike.

What are the most common GEO mistakes?

  • Blocking the crawlers. A restrictive robots.txt that disallows GPTBot or Google-Extended quietly removes you from consideration.
  • Burying the answer. Pages that open with slogans instead of a direct answer are hard to quote accurately.
  • No structured data. Without schema, a model has to guess your entity — and guesses less confidently.
  • Thin, scattered content. Ten shallow pages lose to one deep page that answers the whole question and its follow-ups.
  • Measuring nothing. If you don't track share of voice, you can't tell whether any of it is working.

Avoid those five and you're ahead of most competitors, who are not yet optimizing for AI answers at all.

Common questions

Asked and answered.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

No. GEO builds on SEO but targets a different outcome — being cited inside AI-generated answers rather than ranked in a list of links. It adds engine-specific visibility measurement, deeper structured data, and quotable, answer-first content.

Which AI engines should I optimize for?

The ones buyers actually use: ChatGPT and OpenAI's search, Perplexity, Google Gemini and AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic's Claude — plus classic Google and Bing, which still feed many AI answers.

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical fixes and structured data can be picked up within days once crawled, but building durable share of voice — the citations and corroboration models trust — typically takes weeks to months, similar to SEO.

Do I need backlinks for GEO?

They help. Independent, reputable sources describing your brand consistently make a model more confident citing you. Digital PR and citations are a core part of a serious GEO program.
